Embracing Your Role: How You can impact the world

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

When someone pursues biblical literacy to grow spiritually, it is not just about oneself in this process. The whole reason a disciple remains in Christ is to receive knowledge and wisdom to go back into the world to make a tangible impact for the glory of God. It is a constant walk of learning and absorbing the Bible. It is the personal devotion that empowers us to live a life of faith before others. We live as a tangible example of the power of God through the Word. Our role is to tell others about the hope, love, and strength in the gospel message.

Scripture

James 1:22-25 reads, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” Let us break this down in basic terms:

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” There is a great importance of not just listening to the Word, but it is also essential to take action. We see that not applying what we read is like deceiving ourselves because we do not act. The benefit is gained when we apply the Word to our lives.

“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.” We see an illustrative comparison of someone seeing themselves in the mirror and knowing something needs to be fixed but leaving without fixing themselves. It is the same with someone who reads the Bible and knowing what it says does not apply it to reap the benefits.

“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.” Continuing in it means to do what it says. When this happens, it gives freedom, and the transforming power of the Word will bring blessings and purpose.

What this means for me

The passage encourages us to not just hear the Word of God. It encourages us to practice and make it part of our everyday life. Reading or listening to the Bible should not be for head knowledge only. It is like having a cookbook with all types of recipes to make different types of food, but if the ingredients are never bought and the food is never made, then having the cookbook is not valuable. It is applying what the cookbook offers that makes it worthwhile. There is great value in the Word of God.

Individuals Embracing Their Role

Story: He is known as the “Father of Modern Missions,” he was driven by the Great Commission to spread the gospel message throughout the world, especially in India. He also helped translate the Bible into several languages.

Story: Her faith inspired her to serve as a missionary in India. She rescued and provided shelter for children who were being victims of abuse.

Story: Her faith spurred her to daringly escape her slave condition. After gaining her freedom, she did not think living with her freedom was right, knowing her family and friends were enslaved. So, she became a conductor in the Underground Railroad, leading them to freedom.

Story: He was devoted to his faith and inspired by what the Bible teaches about human life. He supported and helped abolish the transatlantic slave trade.

Get Involved

What has your role been since engaging the Word of God? Those who encounter Jesus are compelled and inspired to act on what they see in the world. What has God called you to do to impact the World for Him? Share your thoughts and experience with me through audio, video, or by writing it? I would love to hear or see you (drop a video).

Invitation

Have you considered Jesus? Jesus is the only one we can truly experience a transformed life. I invite you to receive Him today as your Lord and Savior. Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” There is assurance in these words. Please let me know if you made the decision to follow Jesus. I would love to celebrate with you.

This really spoke to me as I believe it is something we as believers really have to grasp in order to live out the life God called us to live. You can “know” everything that the Bible says, but until you put that “knowing“ into action and live it, you won’t gain Wisdom. The Bible says in James that you show you are wise by living a good life. So we must read and live out God’s Word, and with it we will impact this world for His good!
